Virtual Instrument sound designers are typically Electronic Music Producers. Some producers that enjoyed this sound design aesthetic, find it difficult to use software instruments because software Sound Designers typically don't aim for the above genres. Expressiveness of the instrument comes from the keyboard playing, mod wheel and aftertouch assignments. George Duke, Herbie Hancock, Donald Fagen, Keith Emerson etc. The effects routing and synth settings are designed to emulate tones used by Classic Keyboard players i.e. ![]() Most of the patches they design are optimized for keyboard players within the context of the above genres. ![]() I've worked with Sound Designers from both sides Hardware Sound Designers are generally keyboard players with backgrounds in Rock, Jazz, Fusion, Funk, Gospel and Soul music. In my experience, the sound design approach is one of the biggest differences in sound between the hardware ROMplers and Virtual Instruments. I like Rob Pagen stuff and Largo, my friend recommended z3ta and sylenth1 to me. And some of them I haven't even tried them yet, but my friend recommended some stuff to me after I got tired of using Reason. Some of these are from my Win XP days and I don't use them that often. My friend has the Triton LE but that mainly has my old beats before I had my XP software. Mbox 3 Pro, Access Virus KB, MPK Mini, Reason 5, Largo, Predator, Albino, FM8, Ableton Live 6, Art Vista Virtual Grand Piano, Arturia 2600, Arturia CS-80V, Arturia Moog Modular, AudioRealism Drum Machine, Drumazon, Nepheton, Edirol HQ Orchestra, Emu Proteus, FXpansion VST To RTAS, Garritan Jazz Band, Garritan Personal Orchestra, Minimonsta, Ik Multimedia Philharmonik, Sonik Synth 2, Sampletank, Fl Studio, Korg Legacy, NI Synths, Novation V-Station & Bass Station, Nexus, Adventus, Cubase 3, Largo, Z3ta, Sylenth1, Hypersonic 2, Concrete Blue (and some other random stuff). a lot of programs need to be dropped or updated. I can work with the hardware and software together.my setup isn't as good as yours yet. My hardware is Mpc 4000, voyager, xpander, sp 1200, mks 80, mks 70, op 1. My set up is Live 9 with with quite a few vst's. Why not both? Except instead of new hardware keyboards, I would get some vintage pieces. ![]()
